How to choose your wedding songs

If you’re anything like me, music will act as a reminder of many parts of life, from people to core memories, events, celebrations and achievements. Choosing the perfect songs for your Wedding day can be a tough job, so I hope that I can make the task a little bit easier for you. Today, we’re going to kick things off with the main songs you need for your day and follow it up with just how you can select those tunes.

Here’s a checklist of the songs you’ll want to select:

  • Ceremony Processional (entrance) - Choose up to two if you both want one

  • The signing of the marriage certificate - Allow two to three

  • Ceremony Recessional (exit)

  • Wedding Party Entrance

  • Cake Cutting - I don’t see this often, but you might want it

  • First Dance

  • Parent/Child Dances

It’s a great mood setter to have background music playing as your guests arrive, during canapes and during the reception, if you don’t have entertainment in the way of musicians, so start putting a playlist together of all of your favourites to play during the day. A pre-made Spotify playlist can be a good start, but do be prepared for the odd wildcard to be played!

Here’s a little bit of insight, based on experience. Where I often see people go ‘wrong’ (for lack of better words) is placing the focus entirely on choosing songs they would typically recognise as being ‘wedding’ or ‘love’ songs. Instead, try looking into some of these areas:

  • The artist/s of the best concert you’ve attended together

  • A song that played during your first date, or moments you’ve experienced together

  • Your favourite music genre or genre to suit the theme of your day

  • A song from your favourite movie

One of my personal favourites was a wedding where the lads pulled up by Kombi and made their grand entrance to Thin Lizzy’s ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’. It sure set the tone for the day!

If I can offer my best piece of advice it would be to choose songs with meaning to you. They don’t have to be about love or represent it in any way, shape or form - They can simply be tunes that resonate with you both and remind you about the most special moments you’ve shared together, or they could simply be tunes you share a joint love over.

Until next,
