An Enchanting Fairy Potion Party

I don’t know how it goes in your household, but we’ve had a solid 365 days of build-up to my eldest girl’s fourth birthday and let me tell you - this little lady knows the ins and outs of exactly what a birthday entails.

Coming up with unique themes for children’s parties is no easy feat but as a planner, I love the challenge. As soon as potion-making requests were made on the daily came through a month or so ago, I knew exactly what to do! Cue - Josie’s Apothecary.

Let’s chat through the process, and the dreamy details

First of all, my priority was for the girls to enjoy an activity-based party. The fewer games, plastic and wastage, the better and quite frankly, I wanted to keep them entertained as long as possible so us parents could sit, sip and observe.

I immediately knew I would be hiring a kids trestle table and ghost chairs, then thought about the items I already had in the house, followed by what I needed/was due for or could replenish my stocks of. The pièce de résistance for the potion station was of course the fizzy potion mix from Play It Forward.

To the table I added:

  • Crystal shards

  • Glitter

  • Flower Petals

  • Bowls

  • Spoons

  • Coloured water

  • Droppers

  • Vases with dried flowers (purely for adult aesthetic & a bit of height)

And guess what? The girls stayed at the station for nearly an hour - literally half of the party!

As my girls woke on the morning of the party, our Fairy Door made a return with an actual Fairy from Fairyland who wrote a tiny fairy note to let them know that she would be joining the potion party in the afternoon. Their little faces absolutely lit up and it was a great use of resources from around the house to get the magic going.

I’m not a big favours gal but I do enjoy the excitement from wee ones taking a piece of any party home. I purchased some little reusable jars to put the potions in and take to their new homes. You can pop the potion into ice trays, freeze them and pop them out to use again - or place them around the garden to attract fairies & keep the magic alive.

We kept the food simple for the two-hour occasion. On the menu were cheerios, fruit, fairy bread (naturally) and sushi as well as pink iced tea for the young ones. Of course, that was followed by an almost-too-pretty-to-eat black doris plum & dark chocolate cake decorated in fairies, flowers & glitter dust from Full Time Tart.

The rainbow garland funnily enough was a spur-of-the-moment success as an eleventh-hour request came through for a rainbow to be present for the party. I had purchased this arrangement from Kmart, and adapted it to create the rainbow which was still going strong a week later! Slight disclaimer, don’t take it on without an electric balloon pump or an army of helping lungs - 100 balloons is no easy feat, with or without help.

A lot of this you could do yourself, but my advice is always to weigh up your time vs effort. There is a cost to your time spent - even if it is just the stress levels!

Bringing this party to life was an absolute dream, and so much fun to get stuck into events outside of weddings. What do you think? Would you like to see more ideas like this on the blog? Let me know and your wish could very well be my command.
